Happy New Year from Perseverance Pest Control!
We hope you all have had fun and restful holidays with your friends and family.
With 2018 just around the corner, we thought we could help you with at least one New Year’s Resolution, and we think it’s a pretty good one – committing to staying pest free during this new year! Even though there is always a chance that pests will come into your home, there are a lot of things that you can do to keep your home as pest free as possible
1. De-Clutter Your Home
Cleaning out your home may already be on your New Year’s Resolutions, but it’s also a great way to keep pests from infiltrating your home. Whether the clutter is in your yard, your garage, or in your home, it can attract many different kinds of pests. But by taking the time to clear up some of those extra toys or tools, it can go a long way towards keeping bugs away.
One big thing this includes is making sure that firewood is at least 15 feet away from your home. Firewood is both a home and a food source for rodents and insects, so keeping those wood piles away from your home will keep those bugs outside and away from you.
2. Cleaning Up Your Trash Cans
Whether it’s trash or food, a lot of things that you throw away can be a food source for bugs. Make sure any and all trash ends up inside the trash cans, and by keeping those cans covered you can help prevent bugs from finding a new home around yours.
3. Updating Your Lights
It may seem like a distant memory, but summer here in Indiana can mean a lot of bugs buzzing around outside, and a lot of them like to hang out around light sources. Those flying insects can then attract spiders and other bugs. If you replace outside white lights with insect-resistant yellow lighting, you’ll notice a huge difference in the amount of bugs flying around any outside lights.
4. Clean Regularly
If you’re taking care of the food and trash around your trash cans, then you also need to take care of them around your home. Food that has been left out can feed any kind of bug, from a fly to a roach. Take the time to clean under your fridge and on the sides of your oven, especially if they’re in hard to reach places, in order to keep bugs from finding their next meal in your kitchen.
5. Repair and Replace
Have you noticed more cracks or ripped window screens around your home? Whether those openings are in your foundation or in your roof, insects can use those to get inside your home. Seal the cracks and gaps around your home and replace vents and window screens with holes or rips in them.
Sometimes there are things around your home that keep bugs around that you can’t help, such as living around a forested area or near a body of water. Or maybe there is a neighbor nearby that is not trying to keep their home pest free. Professional exterior treatments add an additional layer of protection to your home to keep ants, spiders, roaches, and other bugs from getting close to you and your family. Quarterly appointments mean that a professional comes out once every season, and he can inform you of the different bugs in your area and around your home.
