Recently, one of the big pest control companies released their list of the Top Bed Bug Cities for 2018 in the United States based on how many treatments for bed bugs that they had to perform between November 2016 and December 2017. So how did Indianapolis do?

In short, not so good. In 2017, Indianapolis ranked 14th among the list of bed bugs in cities, but for 2018 the city moved up 3 spaces to be in 11th place as a city with one of the worst bed bug problems in the nations.

So how can we fix our bed bug issue?

Most importantly, we need to understand how someone can get these nasty pests. Comments from viewers on both RTV6 and Fox59’s articles (which you can read here and here) talked about how only people who didn’t keep a clean home were the ones with bed bugs, or that colder temperatures from this winter would help the population decrease. And, unfortunately, both of those are myths.

Anyone can get bed bugs. They’re hitchhiking bugs, so if they’re hiding in a hotel room or a friend’s home they can find their way into your home easily. Even if you keep your home immaculately clean, bed bugs feed on us, not garbage. So as long as people are around to provide food for them, they will continue to be around too.

And bed bugs aren’t affected by the cold weather either, at least not long enough to kill them. They don’t live outside since they need people to live, so your home would have to hit below 0 for at least four days in order to kill them.

But don’t worry – we’ve put together ways to identify and prevent bed bugs from getting into your home. You can read all about it here. And if you’re seeing them in your home, don’t panic!
